This is the companion post to my YouTube video of the same name, link HERE. So here are the key quotes:
IS IT CONFIDENCE OR ARROGANCE? The Grace of God? or the Pride of Man?
D&C 121:45-46:
45. . . let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God;
and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.
NOTE: Virtue, Confidence and the Holy Ghost are grouped, which then leads to an eternal “dominion.”
THE JOY OF CHRIST AND GAINING CONFIDENCE:
Alma 31:38:
38 And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith.
From Article of Faith 13:
• Seek after “everything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.”
• Live these standards: “honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous and do good to all men.”
So live immersed in the Spirit to discern GRACE when you feel it.
We CREATE something good together,
not tear down anything or anyone.
Use what you need and need what you use.
SO WHAT IS ARROGANCE?
From Our Friend AI:
• Arrogance is an attitude of superiority and self-importance.
• It often involves dismissing others’ opinions or contributions.
• Arrogant individuals may overestimate their abilities or knowledge.
• This behavior can lead to strained relationships and social isolation.
• Arrogance is often perceived as a lack of humility or respect for others.
• It can manifest in both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Does this sound like “Confidence in the presence of God”?
Does Arrogance bring happiness?
EXAMPLE “THE ASSYRIAN” ANTI-CHRIST:
Ezekiel 31:3, 9-10:
3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature;
9 so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.
10 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast lifted up THYSELF in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;
2 Thessalonians 2:3–4:
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
AVOID ARROGANCE: Repent and Retain Confidence
• Repent quickly.
• Receive a remission of sins.
• We are NOT the judge of others’ worth in the Kingdom of God.
• Two Choices: Love or pass unswervingly by (Brooke Shields from memory)
• Speak with love but we don’t have to avoid discussion of differences.
• Monitor yourself, not others.
• Make sure your right hand is watching what your left hand is doing!
• Retain meekness in communication. “A soft answer turneth away wrath.” (Proverbs 15:1)
• But also retain your enthusiasm for participating in God’s work.
• Give the glory to God.
• Focus outward on both listeners and on the topic.
• Recognize and acknowledge the Joy of Christ in others as they speak with the Spirit of God.
DON’T CALL CONFIDENCE “ARROGANCE”
Why do we confuse these two?
• We don’t understand that true confidence comes from the GRACE OF GOD.
• Our own pipeline to God may be blocked or sluggish.
• We are insecure and feel threatened by the confidence of others.
• We feel competitive when someone appears to outshine us, especially in our area of talent.
HOW DO WE OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?
• Affirm what aligns with the Gospel and the Spirit in the moment.
• Ask questions to clarify your understanding.
• Add your insights to expand a discussion, but in “civil discourse.”
• Don’t deify any human, but examine IDEAS alone.•Charity: Give the “Benefit of the Doubt.”
WHEN CONFIDENCE IS CALLED ARROGANCE:
• We are all judged wrongly sometimes and even harshly by others.
• Confidence can look like arrogance so don’t take offense.
• Review D&C 45: Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God . . .
• Charity comes easily when one is full of this confidence or Joy of Christ.
• We must practice Charity when this confidence is at a lower ebb—choose to give others the “benefit of the doubt” and forgive them.
• We can also ask God to fill us with the pure love of Christ when it doesn’t come naturally.
